Top Blogs 2007
SLIDESHOW (100)
Slideshow | All Shots
As we were compiling the massive undertakings that are the Top 100 Undiscovered and Classic Web Sites lists, we couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. There were plenty of Web apps and sites devoted to video, news, shopping, and tech, and all—yet somehow, even after compiling 200 top sites, it still felt as if we weren't giving an accurate picture of our Web-browsing habits.

And then it occurred to us. Blogs.

Sure, we had chosen a few blogs for the Undiscovered and Classics list, but let's face it, in the past few years, weblogs have become one of (if not the) most dominant aspects in our daily Web-surfing routine. So we set forth on the task of rounding up the PC Magazine staff's favorite blogs. Perhaps surprisingly, the hardest part of the task wasn't finding 100 blogs that our staff members liked, but rather whittling our original choices down to a mere 100.

A lot of the staff members' choices were to be expected. No one was too shocked when the first round of nominees came back with plenty of computer and gadget blogs. After all, we are a technology magazine, so naturally a lot of folks on our staff tend to gravitate to the sites that bring us our daily dose of shiny new electronics. Hands down, technology was the category that required the greatest amount of pruning.

Second place is perhaps a bit more surprising, given our beat. It turns out that a unexpected number of PC Mag staffers can't get enough gossip blogging. Not only that, but for the most part, everyone follows different gossip rags, and as such we've got a pretty good cross section of blogs in that category.

So keep in mind that these are Our Favorite Blogs, not the Top Blogs or Best Blogs. The list is even more naturally subjective than our Top Web Sites stories. It doesn't necessarily comprise the best sites the Web has to offer (though that case can be made for many of the sites contained herein). Rather, these are the sites that fuel our RSS feeds, keep us informed, and perhaps, above all, help us kill time. That's not to say that we don't expect the same manner of feedback we got with our Top 100 Web Sites story—as always, we encourage it. Which sites were good calls, and where did we totally miss the boat? Let us know in our online forum.

Oh, and in the spirit of getting to know us better (not to mention a little self-promotion), we thought we'd tack on a list of blogs run by PC Mag staff members, both those that we work on during the day, as part of the Ziff Davis online network, and those we run after hours. We think you'll find the Our Blogs list—ranging from ducks to drinks to comics, and of course a healthy dose of tech—to be almost as diverse as our list of 100 Favorite Blogs.

And of course, what blog roundup would be complete without the inclusion of a few of our favorite podcasts? Our list of Five Podcasts Worth Downloading is by no means complete, but if you're looking to expand your looking to enhance your listening habits in the fields of tech, storytelling, comedy, or even looking to learn a foreign language, you can't go wrong with these picks.
